90 second depict film.
For this project we have been working on 90 second film, we have been filming this to go on the colleges youtube channel and we also have the opportunity to submit the work to the decpict competition. There are loads of different types of moving images productions for example there is animation, in anime there are different ways to present it there are episodes, short films, movies, children's programs which have been put on tv, sometimes anime is used in music videos as well. There are films, videos, trailers, gifs, short films ect. Videos are used everywhere for example there use videos a lot to advertise products, such as adverts, this ay of advertising is mainly used by shops and musicians wanting to get their product to do as well as it can and to get the most audience it can. One example for this is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccNzBhTcehs the main misiion for this is to spread the word for coca colo and get the word across, this video has also become a Christmas favorite so they bring out a new one every year. Another example for a moving image is a music video, of artists use this method to get a better message across. Am example for this is Roadtrips don't hurt yourself music video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4knUnWrkFkQ by using this music video it gives the song more meaning and it makes people relate to the situation and this helps the artists to get more listeners as people would like to know what the message is behind the song is. The way people can access these are by uploading videos on youtube, youtube is used by most people and as long as your profile is available for the public anyone is able to see which allows your video to get more views
There are many different ways to get funding in the film industry for example of it is a it film and a big production they will consider getting a loan to help fund the project, When taking a loan they are able to offer other people deals and if they get the amount that they want they are signed to give the money back from where they got the loan from and sometimes they will ask for profit back. However if you are looking for a small amount of money and the project and your okay with a small amount of money then the cast and crew members will do what they can to get the money that they need themselves, they will be able to make fundraisers to try to raise the amount that they will need to produce the film an example fro this is the Blairwitch project had $60,000 to work with because that is how much the actors and crew was able to raise. Another way is they are able to use profit from other films that they have already made for example Warner Brothers if one movie goes really well and they get a lot of profit from it they are able to use the money for their next movie. They are also able to gain money by crowd funding, this means that you area able to put your ideas out to the public and if people like your idea they will donate some money towards it, depending on how much that the people send in your can get things in return with the amount that you send in. When using this method the result is not guaranteed you may not get as much as you need to do the filing that you want. Another example you could do is use the Lotto fund, when people buy a lottery ticket not all the money goes towards the lottery some of the money goes to the filming industry however when using this they do not give you all of the money that you need but they go give you a lot to help you out but you will need to find the rest.
For our film we did not need to raise any money or take out any loans, we used what we already had so we didn't have to worry about not being able to get anything.
For this project some of the requirements they was needed for making the 90 second film was we had to make a poster to let people know that we was filming and that they could not come in the area for a while and for example when we were filming in the toilets we had to say where the next closest one was so there would be no confusion and we woudn't be disturbed while we was shooting. When we was filming we also had to book the locations in advance and ask for permission to film in specific areas, for this we needed to tell the people why we where going to film there and the specific times that we was going to be there. When shooting we had to shoot over a number of days so we had to keep in mind of the actor wearing the same clothes, by doing this it would stop confusion between the audience with the sudden change.
When filming, directing and to get the 90 second film put together our group switched the roles between each other, we had one consistent actor where we had throughout the film without changing, when it came to filming and the people who are in control of the sound changed so we all had a chance to see what it was like. One of our group has had experience with working with a camera before so they done that first to show the rest of us how to do it. Another member was used to working with editing so he had a major part in our editing at the end of the project. When making this film we had a lot of different types or roles that we had to cover for example we had a director, a person in control of sound and one person in charge of making sure we have the equipment and making sure that they are all booked for when we need them. This is known as a low budget short. The other sections are called a television program which means there is a lot of people and only some of them have assigned rolls and some of them just help where and when they are needed, the name for the other group is a Hollywood feature film, this means that there is a lot of people and everyone has their own assigned jobs for the film.
Cast/other contributes
In our 90 second short film we had 4 official members. Jack was the main actor in the film and he is in every shot we done. Harvey was the one who thought about the idea and came up with the idea of what our film was going to be about and at the start of filming he was also in charge of sound and making sure everything worked and everything was being recorded when it should have been. Jamie was in charge of editing the film and putting everything together in the right order and to make sure everything in our film that we made makes sense and wasn't all over the place and i was the director i made sure we got all the filming we needed to be done, i made sure the paperwork we needed was done and everything was going smoothly on set, I also called action and cut when filming. At the beginning of the film we also had a extra actor to help make the video make sense.
Time
When making this 90 second film we was given about a month, to plan, film and finish everything. When meeting the deadline my group struggled, this is because at the beginning when planning our group decided to change the story board pushing us back on time. We also had a lot of people in our group have time off college when we was supposed to be filming so we had to work around that so we had to work what we could with the people that we had. The one problem that happened most is when we was going to do the bathroom shoot, when we went there to begin filming someone was already in the bathroom pushing us back on time because we had to wait for them to have finished so we could begin filming. When not meeting deadlines in the professional media industry the first time it happens you would get told off and have a warning given to you and if it carries on there is a high chance that you will be sacked from the job and if that happens you will find it extremely hard for anyone else to higher you because they will just think that you wont be able to meet the deadlines that have been given and they wont be able to put a lot of trust in you when filming so it is really important that people do keep on track of deadlines and do not go over them
Equipment/facilities
The equipment that was used for our project was easy access for us to get, we borrowed them for the college, we supplied our own SD card and borrowed everything else from the college. Some of the equipment that was used was a DSLR camera, clapperboard, headphones, boom mic and pole and we also open to Photoshop and adobe allowing us to edit the work that we have been producing and allowing us to be able to put everything together. In the professional media industry they often borrow the equipment from a company for a certain amount of time. When searching internet for some equipment i came across this website, it shows you what everything is used for and how much everything will be and often does discounts https://discountslr.co.uk/
Locations
location recces are paperwork that you have to have signed when thinking about shooting, you have to have these to make sure that you are allowed to film in the location without these forms will not be able to film there, these are mainly used on private property. As well as having reeces there is also location releases. A location release form is a binding contract between the photographer and the owners of private property within or upon which a photograph was taken. By sining the release, the owner of the property the right to sue for specific types of claims. When chosing our locations we went for a location with easy access and we was garunteed to be able to get there and film when we needed, when doing the paper work we had to see many different people to see if we was allowed to film, for example when asking our teacher if we can film in the classroom we didnt ask her if we could film in the photography toilets, we had to ask the head of art for permittion and had to tell them what lessons and times we would be needing to film. When filming we had one problem and that was when we needed to use the toilets someone was in there and we had to wait for them to finish and for the toilet to be free, by having this problem we lost a lot of time waiting around for the toilet to be free.
Materials
For this project we had to use an SD card and borrowed everything else from the college. Some of the equipment that was used was a DSLR camera, clapperboard, headphones, boom mic and pole and we also open to photoshop and adobe allowing us to edit the work that we have been producing and allowing us to be able to put everything together. For these only needed money for the SD card because the we borrowed the rest from college, when paying for the SD card I used my student card as I got bursary which allowed me to supply the group with the equipment that we needed.
Legal Issues
When filming a media production there are a lot of legal considerations when using certain materials for example if you are going to be using sound you may be done for copyright, when being done for copyrite you can be charged a lot of money for using the track without permission from the person who made it. When doing my project we had to be careful with the music that we used as we didn't want to be chargered so when thinking about what music we wanted to use. We overcame this by using a website called Bensound, this is a non copyrighted website so all of the audio was available. Copyright is a law that gives the owner of a work, it can be anything as long as they own and hve their name on it, the right to say how other people can use it. Copyright law makes it easier for authors to make money by selling their work. The product can only be copied if the owner gives permission. Another example on another legal issues is the clearance. A clearance is an official authorization for something to proceed or take place. There is many ways for this to happen for example someone could be having a yard sale, car boot, or just selling items on facebook or any social medias. It is best known for an official decision saying that someone has permission to do something, so when looking at other peoples if you take pictures of it or even if you use it you have to ask before doing do. Some other examples would be the public liability insurance, this covers the most of claims made by members of the public for the incidents that occur in connection with your business activities and also theres the completion guarantee/ insurance this is a form of insurance
offered by a completion guarantor company that is often used in independently financed films to guarantee that the producer will be complete and deliver the film.
Regulation
OFCOM is the regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries. It regulates the TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate.
The BBC is a statutory corporation, independent from direct government intervention, with its activities being overseen from April 2017 by the BBC Board and regulated bt OFCOM. The Chairman is Sir David Clementi. For the difference between OFCOM and BBC I looked on a website and they quoted "Ofcom is currently developing an approach to performance, including the setting of an Operating Licence for the BBC’s UK public services and, if appropriate, it may set performance measures further to those set by the BBC. As part of our performance role, Ofcom also expects to carry out both ad hoc and periodic reviews of the BBC’s services." I got this quote from https://www.ofcom.org.uk/about-ofcom/latest/media/media-releases/2016/ofcom-sets-out-preparations-for-regulating-the-bbc
BBFC is stands for The British Board Of Film Classification previously the British Board Of Film, is a nongovernmental organisation, founded by the film industry in 1912 and responsible for the national classification and censorship of film exhibited at cinemas and video works such as tv, trailers, adverts, public information films, menus, bonus ect. Its function is to put the ages on the product to let people know that age would be best for, for example if you want to watch a movie and there was an 18 sign in one of the corners you would know that the movie is suitable for people the age 18 and over.
An example for this is on the internet they don't have to have the age rating on the movies and videos however Netflix is an example of this although they they don't have to have the age rating they do. This helps the people watching have the idea of how the film/video is going to be and what ages it is going to be appropriate for
Trade unions and trade associations
Trade unions play an essential role in democratic societies. They provide services to members, including legal services but also they represent their members in their dealings with employers and through collective agreements negotiate better working conditions. Trade unions are important because they represent the political interests of poor and disadvantaged people. Most of the trade unions have monopoly power which they use to raise wages above competitive levels. This reduces economic efficiency and increases inequalities by raising the wages of highly skilled workers. As well as Trade unions there is also PACT and BECTU, Pact means there is a formal agreement between individuals or parties and BECTU stands for Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematography and Theatre Union. These are also important because they are committed to promoting health, safety and welfare at work and protecting people from the workplace accidents and injuries. On their home page there is a quote saying "We want workers to enjoy healthy lives and good work in which they can flourish."
Trade associations are organisations founded and funded by businesses that operate in a specific industry, one example for this is ScreenSkills, they are an industry based in the UK working with creative industries for animation, film, games, television including childrens TV and high end drama, VFX and immersive technology. They work across the while country to ensure that UK screen has access to the skills and talent needed for continued success. On their website; https://www.screenskills.com/ it is easy for people to understand where to go and there is a lot of information that would be able to help them figure out what they want to do and gives them an idea on all the different types of jobs that are available in the media industry.
