Research portfolio

 Primary Research 

For my primary research I made a questionnaire, this question air was about how being in lockdown has affected people and their use of social media. The questions can vary from the age, occupation, the house hold they come from to how much time they say that they spend on social media. I have linked the survey underneath.

This is a good way of doing primary research, this is because other people are answering for me and there is a variety of different ages that have taken part in the survey. When the answers to the questions are the same it shows that a lot of people are doing that thing which can also be good for businesses as they will be able to see what most people are doing which can help them when doing advertising they will be able to do questionnaires to see what platform they would be best to promote on. In my case id be able to see hoe long people are on social media, if I wanted to post something to promote my work id be able to know what time people are most active. It also shows me how much lockdown has changed how people live as instead of doing their normal day to day thing they are having to sit at home and talk to people from social media. 

Secondary Research 

During this year, we studied Unileaver, when doing this we also created our own creation. The thing I chose to change was the Pot Noodle. 

In this presentation there is a lot of examples of where I have done some secondary research for example I have had to look up some information about where the pot noodle had started/come from and who made them. I have also spoken about some which comes from Korea so it is from another part of the world and how they are the same just slightly spicier and called a different thing. We know this is secondary research because I have had to google some questions which means I am looking at something someone else has written. 

When I was working on my presentation and looking at my Unileaver, I looked at some YouTube videos of some old adverts that have been made about the old products. One of the ones I watched will be linked below. When watching this video I was looking at inspiration and looking to find some techniques to persuade people to try pot noodle and to make the pot noodles look appetizing. This is an example of secondary research because i am looking at someone else's work and I am analyzing it to see what I can use for my project and to make it more interesting for example in the video linked below the way that the person gets lots of energy, even though he's busy the pot noodle takes 2 minutes to make so no matter what someone is doing they are able to have something to eat.

The links above show that I have done both Quantitative and Qualitative Research, this is because I have asked a number of questions and I have continued to ask people the same to see what question and answers are the same and what are different.

Production Research 

With this I was meant to be able to film a video for the pot noodle however the world went into lockdown so I was unable to do some filming outside of the house so I wasn't able to complete any recces, the only video I was able to do was the video above where I was presenting my PowerPoint for pot noodle. The budget for the video was very small because I was sat in my room with the PowerPoint on my laptop and I filmed me talking to the camera on my phone. 

If I was able to have completed the documents and if I was able to have filmed an advert for pot noodle all of the sheets and paper work would have been a good example of production research this is because I would have been able to plan the location, I would know hoe much it would cost me to complete the video.

technical skills task, lighting, camera and sound

 Lighting  

When we was working with the lighting there was 4 main types we experimented with and below I have named them and am going to give an example next to them

High-key lighting – “high key lighting is a style of lighting for film, tv or photography that aims to reduce the lighting ratio presents in the scene” when working with high key lighting it makes the image brighter and reduces shadows, to make sure that we had achieved this lighting we had 3 light sources, we made sure there was no shadows by getting 2 of the light sources closer to the wall making sure the backdrop was light as well as it could be, we also used another light that was in line with the model that was sitting in the chair so they where light as well.

Low-key lighting – Low key lighting accentuates the contours of the subject by throwing areas into shade while a fill light or reflector may illuminate the shadow areas to control contrast, this style of lighting is normally used and is most known for horror films, when working with low key lighting it only involves one or two light sources for example it is most used for when people say horror stories they normally hold a torch to their chin which illuminates the chin and not much of their other facial feature is light, this allows us to create tension.

Coloured lighting – When working with coloured lighting we used neewer led light panels, these lights allowed us to adjust the brightness of the white and yellows into the lights we want. Using these lights they also allow us to hold some gel against them which allows us to change the colour of the lights for example when we held a blue gel against the light, it gave us a nice cold blue light. This using these lights we had 3 of the neewer led light panels this allowed us to have one colour on one side and another colour on another side this allowed us to have an image with 2 different colours and the colours met in the middle

Cookie lighting – In lighting for film cookie lighting is also known as cucloris this is a device for casting shadows or silhouette to produce patterned illumination. To create this affect you will need a piece to material with lots of shapes cut into it, you will have to hold the piece away from the lighting to get the best result of the pattern.

Camera

In this task we done a lot of different ways to use a camera for example one the ways we recorded was by a single camera shot. When we was using this there we had to retake the video multiple times and move the camera after every shot. This took up a lot more time than expected, if someone made a mistake we would just carry on recording this is because if that was the only part of the footage that went wrong we knew we would be able to go to another footage video and edit it in which saved a lot of time. Using the single camera all we used was one DSLR and one tripod.

Another one we done was multi-camera shot, here we placed 3 cameras in different positions, here we use 3 DSLR’s and 3 tripods this way we was able to film the scene from 3 different directions at the same time the angles we chose where on the table in front of the people so we could get a angle looking at the faces of the actors, behind them slightly to the left to get an angle looking down getting the side of their faces and we also used one to the right slightly angled to get the different sides of the faces. This way I found much easier because we only had to do the scene once instead of doing it a lot of times.

Sound

 Audio recorder –  This is mainly used when recording things indoors because even though it can get close to the actors it will also pick up a lot of the background noise for example if you are using this outside you will be able to hear the wind. When using this you will not have to use headphones

Boom mic and pole –  The principle responsibility of the boom operator is microphone placement, using the boom pole you are able to get the mic closer without getting in shot, these are normally connected to a mixer or recorder with a long XLR cable or connected to a duplex cable that combines a microphone input and headphones for output for the boom operator.  

Headphones – Headphones will be used when you are using the boom and mic this is because it allows you to hear what the recording is like and it is an output for the boom operator.

SD card – when filming even if it is on a camera or with the sound it is important that you have somewhere to store the things that your producing, normally it is an SD card this will allow you to move your files such as sound and videos and place them onto the computer or where ever your work space is.
