There are 2 reasons why the 23rd April 2020 is being spoken about so much on social media and is being highlighted. One reason for this is its St Georges day
Task
In 1965 Galtung and Ruge were media researches and coined the term 'new values' . by saying new values they mean factors that donate how valuable a story might be to an audience and deciding its position in the news. Included in this they are separated into 12 different categories and they are Negativity this involves any type news for example a death in the family or a friend, a incident such as a car crash, an incident from home or work, natural disasters or anything you believe is small such as extreme weather conditions. Closeness to home (Proximity) this is when the audience is known to relate more to the stories so the audience can feel them on a person level such as involving people from their country. . Gatekeepers have to think about how meaningful a story can be to their particular audience.
Recency is when the newspapers compete with the 24 hours TV news to get the news out first, they want to to get the news out as soon as possible as they happen. However this doesn't work all of the time and sometimes take longer than others to finish publishing everything. So recency is not always the best value to rate. Currency, this is the opposite to recency and are the stories that have been shown to the public eye. for example an abduction and murder of a child, this may go on for months even if nothing new happens they will still keep them going so people are aware of the situation and they have updates. Continuity this is events that are going to be ongoing for a long period of time an example for this is lockdown, a war, death from an important person and have a high value so they will only put half of what they know and at the end they will have put "tune in tomorrow to find out more" so they know that they will get a bigger audience. Uniqueness means any story which is unusual for example "giraffe caught up gorleston beach" and like most news it has to have value and the wierder the better as they will get more views. Simplicity is when its obvious but true, this will mean the story is easy to explain and is a thing that could happen on a day to day basis such as 'bird stuck in a chimney' . Personality are stories centred around a specific person as they can be presented as a 'human interest', this is usually used with celebrities such as when the ex One Direction member Harry Styles starred in his first movie Dunkirk. Expectedness (Predictability), when thinking about this there are a couple questions to ask such as does the event match the expectations of a news organisation and/ or its audience?, has what was expected to happen actually happened. such as an attack. If a news story conforms to the preconcieved the idea of those covering it, then it has expectedness as an important news vulvae. Elite Nations or people, this covers anything important, a powerful organisation or organisation that has a greater value than a story with less importance and this goes the same for people for example the queen are newsworthy no matter what happens. Exclusivity is a very important thing when setting the news agenda. They base this if a newspaper new programme is the first and only news organisation breaking the story, they will rate that very highly. The UK Sunday papers are very fond of exclusives and they will often break a story of national or international importance that no one else has. Last but not least we have Size this is does it matter. The money that is involved is higher than the rest and it is based on how much of the story will impact the audiences. This is also known as the threshold.
Corona virus
In the world the Corona virus is a big thing that is a big killer not only in the UK but around the world. Here are some examples...
The image above shows the amount of deaths in the UK alone, here we are able to see that Greater London has a lot more confirmed cases with 18000, the number of recovered and deaths are officially unknown about present as they are changing every second of the day. However i did some more research of the recovered and deaths which is going to be shown on the screenshot below
The above shows the amount of case that there are worldwide. As we can see there is more cases in the United States in 1.04 million confirmed cased, 118k recovered and 59,256 deaths and at the bottom of the list is Iran with 93657 confirmed cases, 73791 recovered and 5957 deaths. By looking at this we are able to see the big difference between both of the countries.
As of 20.04.20 we still havent got a cure for the virus, doctors have been working extremely hard to find a cure however some people show positive affects to the medication and some people have not so they are still looking to find a cure that will help everyone. However last month they announced that they was going to start human trials, they are skipping any animal research to test its safety and effectiveness. " Most experts think a vaccine is likely to become avaliable by mid-2021, about 12 - 18 months after the new virus, known officially as Sars-CoV-2, first emerged". I got this news from the BBC website.
In late march Boris Johnson declared that we start coronavirus testing would increase to 25,000 tests a day. Their are 2 different kinds of testing which are avaliable for Covid 19 which us a diagnostic test which tells you if you have a current infection, and a Serologic test which tells you if you had a previous infection also known as an antibody.
A serologic test may not be able to show you if you have a current infection because it takes 1-3 weeks to make antibodys after symptoms occur.
First human trial in Europe of a coronavirus vaccine has begun in Oxford. More that 800 people where recruited for the study of this vaccine 2 volunteers where injected. Half will receive the Covid 19 vaccine and half a control vaccine. The trial means volunteers will not know which vaccine they are getting. The vaccine was developed in under 3 months by a team of oxford univercity. Sarah Gilbert, professor of vaccinology at the Jenner institute led the pre clinical research. Sarah previously said she was 80% confident the vaccine would work, but now prefers not to put a figure of it, saying she is very overoptimistic about its chances. The vaccine is made from a weakened version of a common cold virus known as an adenovirus from chimpanzees that has been modified so it cannot grow in humans. The only way the team will know that the Covid 19 vaccine works is by comparing the numbers of people who get infected with the corona virus in the months ahead from the 2 arms of the trial. A larger trial of about 5000 volunteers will start in the coming months and will have no age limits, the older generation may need 2 doses of the jab or vaccine because they have a weaker immune system.
While the coronavirus is a big thing that is stopping a lot of people from doing their day to day things, there is a lot of rules in place and by saying this we are required to wear a lot of Personal Protective Equipment. Some of the equipment that has been noted for us to wear are, gloves and a mask. The government has also introduced a 1.5 meter social distancing and we have been advised to wash our hands more regularly and take hand sanitiser with us whenever we go shopping. Asda and Aldi are also thinking about adding a rule that you are only allowed to pick up items you know 100% that you are going to be purchasing. We have also been told to isolate with people who are at home and only leave for appropriate things, we are allowed out once a day for a daily walk that can last an hour and we can drive to have a walk but the walk has to be longer than the drive.
Care homes have taken a lot of thought into the corona virus and they have stopped people from visiting the care home as a protection for the elderly and for the carers. By doing this they are able to make sure that the virus is not able to enter the building. The workers also have to wear surgeon masks and unlike certain workers they don't have to keep their distance as and they are able give the patient the attention and help they need. The staff just need to be careful with who their being aroiund outside of work.
During this hard and weird period every week on a Thursday at 8pm there is minute clap for the NHS as a thank you for helping and working with the dangerous virus and risking their lives for others. This was started by the Anne Marie Plas, from Brixton, London came up with the idea after seeing something similar in her home country the Netherlands so she wanted to spread the positively down, it started on 26th March at 8pm. To show an appreciation for the key workers and carers that work for the NHS.
During the lockdown and corona virus period there has been a lot of people panic buying, some of the main things that people have been panic buying include, bread, pasta, toilet roll, baking ingredient, hand sanitiser, tinned food.
People have different views on this, some people believe that we should get everything while we csn, overload on things and then we have nothing to worry about as we wont need to go out and get anything causing us to have a risk of getting the virus. However by making shops sell out if things people are not thinking about the older generation and some people who are less fortunate that us. The wearhouses are under a lot of pressure to keep having to restock the items that they need and if not that puts a bad look on them for not being able to provide what everyone is needing.
The coronavirus is causing a lot of problems, not only is it making people ill but it is also causing young people to miss out on their education. Schools, colleges, unis have all been advice to shut. People are now having to work from home, emailing their teachers and doing zoom meetings online to talk with their teachers on a one to one basis. The students are getting their mark on a predicted grade which will be given by their tearhers, this will be based on how well they were working in class and how well they are doing from home. Current year 11s are also worried about not being able to have a prom as there are so many questions that are not yet able to be answered, they will be getting their predicted grades from their teachers aswell and them grades will be able to tell them if they have been able to get into college.
More than one million job are on the line and several are already struggling firms have collapsed. the corona virus pandemic has put millions of UK jobs at risks as companies struggle to cope with the financial strain created by the shut down. The hardest hit sectors have been high street busnisses such as retailers, restaurants that rely on shoppers and nights out. The UK hospitality group, which represents bars, cafes and restaurants estimates more than 1 million jobs are on the line. Retail which employs 5 million people, has had its main customer supply line cut off with the closure of the high street resulting in a growing number of casualties. Busnisses that where struggling before the corona virus outbreak have suffered most so far. Several ferms have collapsed in administration, although more are still trading which buys are sought they include: debenhams - went into administration on April 9th with 20,000 jobs at risk. All shops are closed until further notice which means they will be losing out on customers money which means they are losing profit so they company will struggle to carry on.
